The Town of Cochrane will be bustling not only with Christmas cheer but with girls from all over Alberta and Saskatchewan strapping on their skates for the Cochrane Classic Ringette Tournament.

The 8th annual tournament takes place at Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre from December 9-11.

Alyssa Bates, Cochrane Classic Ringette Tournament, Director, says because of the growing popularity of the sport and increase of applications for the tournament they have had to expand to the old arena.

“We had over 150 applications from all over the province and even from Saskatchewan this year which was up about 50 applicants. For the last few years we didn’t have to use the old arena but because the tournament is bigger this year and ice time is hard to find we are having some of our games at the old arena.”

There are 46 teams involved and each team is guaranteed three games with a chance to play a fourth in the finals.

Kids U12 and up can go on to play for gold and silver medals as well as a trophy.

“We’ve had trophies for years that actually stay at the original Cochrane Arena that’s engraved with the winners on a little plaque each year.”
