Agribition Set Some Records This Year

Everyone who took part in Canadian Western Agribition in Regina this year, was talking about what a great show it was. Now the numbers are in to prove it.

The 2017 show saw a 40 per cent increase and record high in international buyers, with 365 buyers coming from 86 different countries.

Show attendance was up by 2.7 per cent over last year, with 126,500 visitors.

Overall, international guests totaled about 1,250 many of whom took home some top quality genetics.

Total livestock sales were the best they've been since 1997 and the second highest in Canadian Western Agribition history, at $3.5 million.

Purebred cattle sales also set a new record with a high of $2 million.


Changes Could be on the Way for Canada's Grain Grading System

The Canadian Grain Commission is currently reviewing all aspects of the Canadian grain grading system.

Head of Communications, Remi Gosselin, says the goal is to take required actions to prove its efficiency and to make the system more relevant to the needs of the grain sector.

He says, the grain grading system review could take a number of years, although some of the changes may be in place this spring.

Final Hail Report for 2017 Released

The Canadian Crop Hail Association has released its final hail report for 2017.

A lack of moisture across much of the western prairies meant little in the way of convective storm activity, resulting in hail losses.  

Overall, Alberta hail claim payments declined 60 per cent from 2016, and a lighter than average loss for the Province.

One of Alberta's most expensive hail dates was July 27th, damaging about 33,000 acres and costing over 2.2. million dollars.


Beef Industry Benefits From PM's Visit to China

There was some good news for Canada's beef industry as Prime Minister Trudeau and China's Premier announced an agreement to expand access for Canadian beef into China.

It's estimated the new access announced could be worth $125 million in additional beef exports to China over the next five years.
