The Alberta Beef Producers have welcomed changes being proposed for the Marketing of Agricultural Products Act made by the provincial government last week.

The amendments will allow producers to determine funding models for agricultural commissions, such as the Beef Producers, that best suits the collection of service charges, or check-offs.

“These amendments will allow producers to make the decision to return to a non-refundable service charge through a plebiscite. We’ve been talking about the state of industry funding for a long time and how it impacts our competitiveness. Producers have given us clear direction at our fall meetings, as have delegates at our general meetings, to seek a return to a non-refundable service charge,” said Bob Lowe, ABP Chair.

"We look forward to working together with industry partners to move towards a plebiscite and put the decision in the hands of producers,” said Rich Smith, Executive Director.
