A new grain terminal and crop input centre is being built in Viking, AB.

The new Parrish & Heimbecker, Ltd. (P&H) facility will include 46 thousand tonnes of grain storage, and a 25 thousand tonne dry bulk fertilizer shed, all attached by CN railway with a 150-car loop track.

Western Regional Manager of P&H, Lloyd Heimbecker, says about a year ago,  Parrish & Heimbecker acquired 4 crop input retailers in Sedgewick, Wainwright, St. Paul and Marwayne, making Viking a central location to support these centres.

"Being that it's large in size, and that we can import things such as bulk fertilizer, and store large quantities of chemical, it becomes a bit of a service model for providing extra services to those retail locations."

A chemical storage facility is also scheduled for construction at the new facility.

"It also allows us, in an environment where we're currently only selling fertilizer products and crop protection products, to strengthen the relationship by us being able to buy the farmer's crop at the end of the year."

John Heimbecker, President of P&H, says the new Viking crop input centre and grain terminal puts P&H on the map to serve farmers and communities in the north and central Alberta areas.

"We expect to create 20 new jobs locally and expand new inputs and grain merchandising opportunities for area farmers and P&H. P&H broke ground for the new terminal in November 2017 and expect the economic spin-offs from the local construction crews to be significant to the Viking area over the next two years."

The new facility is expected to be up and running by early 2019.
