Another huge merger in the agriculture industry has canola growers across Canada concerned.

According to canola growers the merger of Monsanto and Bayer has the potential to significantly reduce competition.

Alberta Canola Producers Commission General Manager Ward Toma says there are only three companies that have ownership of herbicide tolerant traits in canola these two have a significant share.

"That's a huge concern to have that kind of market power in the two companies that are basically going to own that space," he says. "As well the two companies own a very very significant share of total canola seed sales to farmers."

He says the merger could also diminish the incentive to innovate for the future.

"One of the things they're trying to sell this merger is the size of the company will allow for increased innovation, that's true, but increased innovation against a competitor also drives innovation," Toma says.

The Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario canola growers, as well as their national organization are calling for a timely and rigorous review by the federal regulator.
