Alberta farmers will see a nine cent reduction per tonne in their week-check off effective this August.

Since the end of the Canadian Wheat Board in 2012, farmers have had two reductions off their cash ticket; one for the Alberta Wheat Commission at 70 cents a tonne, and one for the Western Canadian Reduction at 48 cents a tonne. The $1.18 check-off will now be reduced to $1.09 per tonne.

The levy is used for research projects and funding to help wheat producers. The activities funded include wheat breeding programs, market development, and expansion to new wheat markets.

Tom Steve, General Manager of Alberta Wheat Commission, says they will be working more effectively to meet obligations in order to give farmers a small check-off reduction.

"We're funded by farmers, we're accountable to farmers, and we think that's a good way to operate a commission based on the feedback we receive from our members."

The AWC will be working closely with the Manitoba and Saskatchewan commissions  to take a western Canadian approach to wheat research and funding.
