Cochrane Mounties have laid charges against a Calgary man, following an investigation into the distribution of illegal drugs on the Stoney Nakoda First Nation.

Thirty-eight-year-old Robert Pettitt of Calgary is a repeat offender, whose recent charges stem from an investigation that took place at the start of the year.

Corporal Troy Savinkoff with the Cochrane RCMP says that the Cochrane detachment underwent a lengthy drug trafficking investigation in January of 2021.

"As part of that investigation, we identified Mr. Robert Petit and actually arrested him and laid some pretty serious charges against him for trafficking Fentanyl and Meth in the Stoney Nakoda First Nation," says Savinkoff.

At that time, Petit was charged with multiple offences including trafficking of a controlled substance and he was later released on conditions that are still before the courts.

Savinkoff says the Crime Reduction Unit had reason to believe that Petit was still heavily involved in the distribution of illegal drugs in Stoney Nakoda, and they executed a search warrant.

"On June 16 /17 we executed a search warrant on his property in Calgary," says Savinkoff. "We found 106 grams of Methamphetamine, 53 grams of Fentanyl, some small quantities of Crack Cocaine, some Marijuana and prescription pills that he shouldn't have had on him."

Robert Pettitt has been charged with 11 offences including trafficking, possession for the purpose of trafficking, weapons offences, and failing to comply with release conditions.

Savinkoff says that he has been remanded in custody, until his next scheduled court appearance.

"Obviously our hope is that he remains in custody until he faces all charges," says Savinkoff. "These charges are extremely serious and they usually carry sentences in the amount of years of jail time."

Petit is scheduled to appear in court on June 21, 2021.
