Rocky View County Council has approved a 2020 operating and capital base budget that will see a two per cent tax increase on residential properties.

The operating budget for next year is expected to be $147.5 million, while $58 million is slated for capital projects. Approximately half of the County’s operating budget is funded through taxes, with the other half funded through user fees and operating grants.

Highlights from the 2020 capital budget include $9.6 million to service the West Balzac development area, as well as $3.7 million to continue the Langdon Centre Street enhancements. The northern part of the county will see a $2.75 million project to widen Dickson Stevenson Trail to Highway 2A, while the previously announced Bragg Creek flood mitigation project continues in the west.

Council also received the county’s 2020-2024 financial plan as information. The plan consists of a three-year operating budget and a five-year capital plan.

“With a greater economic depth and diversity than most, the county continues to be a desired location for people to live, work and play,” says RVC Reeve Greg Boelke.

The 2020 budget process included an open public meeting on Nov. 4. Following the initial presentations, the public was invited to provide input on the budget via email or in-person at a special council meeting.

Final approval of the budget and tax rates takes place in April 2020, when Council approves any new or unfunded initiatives as well as the 2020 tax rate bylaws.
