January 1 will bring a new year to your door step but what it won't bring is door to door energy sales.

The Alberta Government is putting the ban in place to protect Albertans from aggressive sales pitches and being pressured into contracts they don't want.

Stephanie McClean, Minister of Service, says it Is part of the plan to protect Alberta's families.

"I am happy the New Year brings relief to Albertans and I look forward to taking further action to better protect Alberta consumers throughout 2017."

The prohibition affects unsolicited door to door sales of energy goods and services, but if companies don't comply they could face fines of up to 300,000 or imprisonment up to two years, as well as, up to $100,000 in administrative penalties, director's orders and licensing actions.

However, companies can still reach customers using telephone and online sales, kiosks and advertising to sell their energy products.

The consumer can also contact the company and invite them into their home.

In any door-to-door sales visit a home owner should:

  • Always ask to see official company-issued identification
  • Don't feel pressured to sign contracts on the spot
  • Be cautious of a door to door offer
