You have to wonder if even Terry Fox could have imagined the impact that his life and legacy of the Marathon of Hope would have after 37 years.

In 1980, Fox set off from St. John's, Newfoundland on, what was to be, a cross country run to raise money for cancer research.  When the spread of cancer forced him to cut his run short, and eventually took his life, Fox had inspired the country and raised $1.7 million.

But, not even Terry could have known how much of an inspiration he was, and continues to be, to people all around the world.

This Sunday (September 17th) the 37th Annual Terry Fox Run will be held at Mitford Park in Cochrane as well as in cities and towns across Canada and in 60 countries aorund the world.  During those years, over $750 million has been raised for cancer research in Terry's name.

Lindsay Regier, the organizer of the Cochrane run, is excited to be part of Terry's legacy and excited as well to see that people are still inspired by him.

This is Regier's third year of organizing the Cochrane run and she's hopeful that this will be the best yet.  "I just checked and we've raised $5,000 even before the run's started!  I'm really encouraged and excited because I think we might be setting a record this year if we keep going that way.  Just being where it's at right now I really think it would be awesome if we could break $15,000 'cause that's a level we haven't reached yet."

This year's run starts and ends at Mitford Park, with registration at 10:00 am and the run starting at 11:00 am.  Before the race, long time run supporter Donna Morris will speak to the group of runners.  Morris has entered with a team for years in support of her sister who sadly passed away last year from the disease.  After the run, a community barbeque, which is free for run participants, will start at noon.  Community members can make a donation to get lunch, while supplies last.

Regier is hopeful that this year's turnout will surpass last year's total of 180. "People can definitely register online in advance if they want to fundraise but they should know that they can participate by donation on the day of the run,  There's no minimum required, so we appreciate any amount as a donation and it looks like the weather's going to be nice so it should be a really fun day."

All money raised by donations goes directly to the Terry Fox Foundation,  Race organizers rely on sponsorships by community partners for race expenses so all proceeds can go to the foundation and directly into cancer research,
