Captain Clot Buster (aka Martin Parnell) has decided to come out of retirement for one last race in honour of Canada's 150th birthday.

While some of us may not make it 'round the block, Parnell will be running 150km as he raises money for a charity near and dear to his heart, 'Right to Play'.

We have decided to follow Parnell through his journey; highs, lows, health, fundraising, and advice as he gears up for this monstrous feat. The Confederation 150k will take begin on May 27 at 6pm and must be completed in 19.5 hour; to put in perspective, Captain Clot Buster will essentially run from Cochrane to Lake Louise.

In week 9, after returning from a trip to England, Parnell says he is back in full training mode; leading into this week, Parnell ran 80km.

"I did two 30k runs and one 20k run, it went well. My route takes me 10k up Horse Creek Road from my home and back again and then I do the remaining on the pathways. What an amazing run up Horse Creek; I leave at 7 in the morning,  it's dark, I've got my headlight on and I head up the road of the Foothills and the first thing I see is a herd of deer that are jumping the fences and crossing the road, I mean there must have been 30 of them. And then of course the fantastic sunrise on the Rockies, it is just a glorious time to run."

With getting 80km in last week; this week Parnell will do 60km plus snowshoeing before gearing up for a number of 100km run weeks.

Nutrition, hydration, and electrolytes all need to be carefully monitored throughout Parnell's training. Headed out with four water bottles, Parnell must take in 250 calories an hour plus electrolytes.

"Now the 30k runs are taking me about 3.5 hours so I've got to come back to the house and switch out two of the empty bottles for two full bottles, and that will get me through the 30k."

For Parnell, fundraising is also part of this journey as he hopes to raise $5000 by the time he laces up to run 150km. Right to Play is an organization that believes in giving children around the world hope and an opportunity to play. Parnell is actively fundraising already and we will keep track of those weekly totals.

"Right now we are at $1280 raised towards the $5000 and obviously over these next 9 weeks and the event we want to break the $5000 mark."

For this weeks fit tip, if you are new to running, get your self some comfortable shoes.

"The first thing to do is get yourself a pair of shoes that are comfortable, don't worry about make or model or all the hype you hear. Go to an independent store the Running Room, Gord's, Strides, there's a lot of great stores. Go and talk to the people there, try on shoes, and get a comfortable pair. If you are about to start running that is your number one step."
