Motorists across the province seemed to be more compliant over the holidays this year.

The Alberta RCMP carried out several enforcement initiatives over the festive season, which focussed on promoting traffic safety.

According to a release from provincial Mounties, between December 24, and January 3, they recorded 1,952 roadway offences; that's down from the 2,578 recorded during the holidays last year.

During that week and a half time span, officers issued a total of 1,812 traffic tickets provincewide.

Overall, 506 drivers were ticketed for speeding, 55 motorists were caught distracted driving, and 125 impaired drivers were removed from the roads by way of provincial Immediate Roadside Sanctions.

The RCMP release states that due to a variety of aggravating factors, 15 out of the 125 impaired drivers were also charged with "Criminal Code Impaired Driving by Alcohol" and an additional 1,251 motorists received tickets for traffic safety violations including careless driving, driving with a prohibited or suspended license and moving offences.

According to Alberta RCMP's Sgt. Darrin Turnbull, Mounties worked hard through traffic education and enforcement initiatives, to help more Albertans arrive home safely over the holiday season.
