You have to dig back to Oct.17 to find a mark in the losing column for the Cochrane Chaos junior female hockey team.

Heading into the Christmas break, they now have a firm grip on first place in Alberta Junior Female Hockey League (AJFHL). The Chaos are on a hard-earned 12-game winning streak and are proving to be tough to beat wherever they play.

With only two losses on the season, they continue to build momentum in hopes of raising the championship trophy that's been within a hair's breadth in their six-year history.

"We're starting to get a lot of belief that if we keep on this roll, the girls play hard, and we play our game, that we have a really good chance to have a lot of success in the playoffs and maybe win that provincial championship we've been aiming for."

Over the weekend, they notched their final two wins before the holiday break. They beat the Calgary Titans at home 5-0 on Dec. 17, then hit the road Saturday and doubled the Lethbridge Eagles, 4-2, who at one time were at the top of the south division.

Head coach Derek Loomer says it was their first game against the Titans since their home opener on Sept. 25.

"I think we never really gave them any good opportunities the entire game, and with the chances that they got, Ella (Fournier) played extremely well and earned her shut out."

With many players tied up with school commitments, they rolled into Lethbridge with just 12 skaters and two goalies last Saturday.

"I think the girls dug down deep and managed to pull out a solid win against the Eagles."

A key win took place the week previous against their nemesis in the north division: the Edmonton Wolves. It's a team they just haven't been able to beat in the last couple of years.

"Their goalies just shut us down and they took advantage of their chances," he says. "This time, though, I think we kept pressuring them, got our breaks, never really gave them any at our end, and shut them down."

The Chaos kicks off 2022 on the road against the Lethbridge Eagles. Most of their remaining games are on the road, and their next home game is on Jan. 28.

"It has been a pretty exciting first half. Now, we're taking off a couple of weeks to regroup and try to start right where we left off in January."
