Summer is in full swing, but before we know it kids will be putting away their bikes and hitting the books as they head back to their classrooms.

For some families, getting geared up for the school year can be a stressful time, and the added cost of school supplies and clothing can be extremely overwhelming.

The Cochrane and Area Family Resource Network (FRN) has partnered up with Staples and the local Kiwanis Club to help ease the financial strain associated with the start of the school year.

They're launching a back-to-school Backpack Program to bring families some relief and help to set local students up for a successful school year.

Family Resource Network Coordinator, Amy Farley says that the students who access this program will receive a brand new backpack filled with the required supplies for their grade level.

"The kids will get to choose what backpack they want," explains Farley. "Staples very generously donated at least 100 backpacks filled with supplies according to the school [supply] list. The grade one children for example will have a much different list than the grade 12 children."

The Kiwanis Club of Cochrane and Area have donated gift cards that can be used to fill in any gaps as well as scientific calculators for high school students.

The program typically supports more than 100 local students, however, Farley believes there may be a greater need this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"In the past year, it's been really, really hard on a lot of our families," says Farley. "We've had a lot more families coming in to access the food bank, a lot more parents losing their jobs and struggling financially. So, if anyone in the community wants to donate they can come into the Family Resource Network or they can stop in at Staples as well."

Farley says the families registered for the program can enjoy activities and treats and have a back-to-school photo taken while picking up their backpacks.

"On August 19 from 6 to 8 [p.m.] at the New Family Resource Network, they can come to pick out their backpacks, we'll have some activities, some game and snacks," explains Farley.

Participating families will also receive a food hamper from the foodbank.

The back-to-school Backpack Program is available to help local kindergarten to Grade 12 students, however, families must pre-register before August 19.

You can register by calling (403) 851-2265 or you can stop by the Family Resource Network at 127 First Ave West in Cochrane.
