BASE jumping is a relatively new activity involving parachuting or wingsuit flying from a fixed structure or cliff.

Due to the lower altitudes of the jumps, BASE jumping is significantly more dangerous than skydiving from a plane

In the past month alone, two base jumpers have died nearby in the mountains, one on Rundle Mountain, and the other on Grotto Mountain.

While BASE jumping is legal on public land such as Grotto Mountain, Jill Sawyer, Regional Communications Officer Alberta Environment and Parks reminds everyone that is not the case in Provincial parks.

"We have legislation around motorized, and non motorized aircraft," she says. "The regulations around that say that it is prohibited within the provincial parks, so you can't take off and land in provincial parks."

She says BASE jumping within provincial parks takes a toll on public safety staff, especially as it becomes more common.

"We track occurrences of public safety and rescue operations going out to find people and help people, in those terms we've had 6 occurrences since June 2015 of our public safety team responding to BASE jumping incidents. We've have three fatalities in that time period, all three of them were related to wingsuit flying which is a new thing we're starting to see more of in the park."

If caught BASE jumping in a provincial park an individual could face a maximum fine of $100,000.

Although the extreme sport is illegal in parks, if you plan to BASE jump there are some precautions you should take; Let family know when and where you are planning to jump, what your parachute looks like, and what clothing you're wearing.
