Be on the lookout for orange safety vests dotting provincial highway roadsides this Saturday.

The annual provincewide cleanup program runs between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. on May 5 and hundreds and volunteer organizations and thousands of volunteers will help collect garbage that has accumulated over the last year. It involves 120 groups in the Calgary area alone and includes multiple 4-H clubs, junior forest rangers, church organizations and other nonprofits on highways well travelled by Cochranites.

Many of the participants are youth under the supervision of adults.

Drivers are asked to slow down, obey signs and use caution when passing cleanup crews. Participants are asked to be aware of their surroundings, make sure they are visible and obey all traffic signs.

The cleanup day not only improves the aesthetics of Alberta highways, it's a fundraiser for many nonprofit organizations.  Last year, the Alberta government contributed about $1.1 million to 709 volunteer organizations involved in the highway cleanup. Over 17,000 volunteers collected more than 53,000 bags of garbage while cleaning up more than 13,000 kilometres of Alberta roads.
