Multiple Cochranites have taken to social media today to report sightings of a bear in our community.

The bear has been seen in both Fireside and Riversong.

Letters to parents of children at both Fireside School and Holy Spirit Catholic School were sent out on Thursday afternoon informing parents that there was a bear in the region. Children at Fireside School were brought back into the building during morning recess and were kept inside during lunch recess as a safety precaution.

Cochranites are being reminded to be bear aware both in and outside of our town:

  • Carry bear spray (be sure to check the expiration date.
  • Make noise
  • Keep all pets on a leash and close to you at all times.
  • Be aware of your surroundings on walking on trails
  • Be respectful of the space and needs of wildlife

If you do encounter a bear or any other wildlife that could be a public safety concern you are asked to call the 24-hour Report-A-Poacher line at 1-800-642-3800.

Fish and Wildlife officials have been contacted.
