The Government of Alberta is warning Albertans that there have been reports of people receiving texts falsely claiming to be from the provincial government.

It is a phishing scam in which the recipient is invited to apply for an energy rebate by clicking on a URL link.

Both the provincial and federal governments wish to emphasize that no such emails have been sent by them.

Never click on links or provide personal or banking information in response to text messages or emails if you have not requested them or if you cannot confirm the sender.

The Alberta government's forthcoming electricity rebate program will be applied directly to Albertans' bills in the coming months.

You do not need to apply for the rebate.

The electricity rebate will see about 1.9 million Albertans receive bill credits of $50 over a three-month period for a total of $150.
