Albertans are being encouraged to brush up on their bear safety this August long weekend.

Due to an increased number of buffalo berries in the Rockies this summer, more bear related incidents have been reported.

"It's really hard for bears to hear you coming and it's hard for them to see you, so consider looking for trails that have really open lines of sight." said Kim Titchner, Founder of Bear Safety & More.

It is suggested that those who travel to the mountains for the long weekend bring bear spray, but there are several ways to stay safe before it is necessary.

The more people you travel with the better, as bears are less likely to attack groups of over two people. Making lots of noise is also recommended.

Since the bears are frequently feeding on berries when an incident occurs, being aware of your surroundings and staying away from thick vegetation is also a good idea.

"Try to get up high this weekend, maybe it's the first time you try doing a ridge walk." said Titchner.

With all that said, bear spray is still your most potent weapon, but as Titchner adds, it does have a shelf life and expiry dates must be obeyed.

Bear spray contains a chemical called propellent which allows it to spray further, but when expired the chemical breaks down, rendering it ineffective.

Most outdoor suppliers carry bear spray, such as Canadian Tire and Bass Pro Shops.
