Dawna Bornais says her adrenaline was pumping this afternoon when a black bear entered her backyard.

Bornais says her neighbour sent her a text message at around 2:30 p.m. notifying her of the visitor.

"Of course I kind of did a double-flip of what? I looked out my back door and about 15 feet from me there was indeed a black bear, I'm guessing between one and two years old and he was at my bird feeder and he was having a lovely snack."

She says she and her neighbour were making noise in an effort to scare the bear away.

"I banged on pots and we were yelling at him and he didn't move a bit."

Bornais estimates the bear was in her Jumping Pound Terrace backyard for about 15 minutes.

Eventually the bear did leave and was seen going down toward the Jumping Pound Creek.

She says she's very cognizant that bears are not uncommon in Cochrane and she brings her bird feeder inside each night.

Alberta Fish and Wildlife as well as the RCMP were notified and were on scene shortly after the appearance.
