Alberta Health Services have identified a blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) bloom in areas of Cochrane Lake. Residents and visitors are advised to avoid all contact with the algae and should take the following precautions.

People and pets should avoid wading or swimming in the area. If you were to come in contact, wash with tap water as soon as possible.

Pets should not be fed any fish (whole or trimmings) from the area. Human consumption of whole fish from the area should be limited as as it is known that fish may store toxins in their liver. Fish fillets are considered safe.

Never consume or cook with untreated water from the area. Boiling the water will not remove the toxins produced by the algae.

Coming in contact or consuming the blue-green algae may cause multiple symptoms including :

  • skin irritation
  • rash
  • sore throat
  • sore red eyes
  • swollen lips
  • fever
  • nausea and vomiting and/or diarrhea

Symptoms can arise one to three hours after exposure. Children who come in contact often have more pronounced symptoms.

Exposure to the bacteria may be fatal to pets.

Blue-green algae appear like scum, grass clippings, fuzz, or globs on the surface of the water. While named blue-green algae, it can also appear greenish-brown, brown, and/or pinkish-red and often smells musty or grassy.
