If you think the warm weather of the weekend will stick around, you are wishful thinking.

While weather temps will start off nice, Kyle Fougere, Meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, says Cochranites could see snow by the end of the week. "Our typical high at this time of year is 15 degrees, so we will be above normal today (September 23) with a high of 17. Then the next two days will stay pretty nice with 14 degrees as a daytime high and then we have a series of low-pressure systems coming through the province.

The first of the two systems will make an appearance Wednesday evening into Thursday, shares Fougere, and Cochranites should brace themselves. "It will drag down some cooler temperatures with it. The precipitation with the system will likely start as rain with the daytime high on Thursday only expected to be about 5 degrees. As we get into Thursday night, the precipitation will likely switch over to snow with an overnight low of only -3 for Friday morning."

If you thought that sounded bad, the other system is anticipated to be even worse. "The next system is expected Friday into Saturday. Since the cold is already in place, there is a pretty good chance the other system will have snow associated with it."

Environment Canada doesn't like to give any specifics for forecasting much beyond a week, says Fougere. But depending on exactly how much snow we accumulate this week, it could stick around. "With this being the first day of astronomical fall, it is typical to get snowfalls, but not have the snow stick around for that long. It remains to be seen, but if we get a lot of snow it could stick around for quite a while. Right now, it is still quite a ways out for the second system to come in to know exactly how much snow is going be falling. The official forecast is for a 60% chance of flurries for Saturday night into Sunday, but there is definitely potential for a significant amount of snow with the system that is coming."

Best advice, Fougere can offer?! Switch out your summer tires and keep your eye out for weather updates later this week. "Now that it is fall, everyone knows the weather can be quite variable in Alberta at this time of year. You tend to get really strong pressure gradients, so it is not uncommon to see what you're going to see this week, so it is always good to be prepared. Stay tuned and watch the mornings as we get closer to the end of the week."
