A Bragg Creek man has tragically died following a massive windstorm that swept through Southern Alberta on Tuesday.

Winds travelling at 140 km/h took down powerlines and several large trees in the area, leaving close to 1,000 residents without power.

Cochrane RCMP's Corporal Troy Savinkoff says the man was killed while trying to clear up debris after the windstorm.

"The RCMP did respond to a complaint yesterday of a young man who was assisting his father removing some trees from across the roadway in Bragg Creek," explains Savinkoff. "They were utilizing a tractor to facilitate, unfortunately, there was an incident involving that tractor."

Emergency crews were called to the West Bragg Creek property at approximately 9:30 on Wednesday morning. Fire Chief, Rob Evans with Redwood Meadows Emergency Services says their crew was initially called to assist someone trapped under a tree, but upon arrival discovered the deceased man trapped under a heavy-duty tractor.

"When we arrived we actually found the male underneath the tractor that had rolled on top of him," explains Evans. "He subsequently died as a result of the accident. Our crews were able to recover his body from under the tractor."

Evans says that Tuesday's windstorm significantly left its mark on the area, and some residents are still feeling the effects today.

"There's hundreds, literally hundreds and hundreds of trees that have blown over from the winds the other night,"  explains Evans. "People are busy, companies are busy in Bragg Creek cleaning up the debris. There's a lot of large old trees that really need professionals. These trees are so big it's not your normal thing, you really have to know what you're doing."

Many powerlines were also affected leaving residents of Bragg Creek, Redwood Meadows, Morley and the Tsuu T'ina Nation without power. Evans says that power has been restored in the majority of the affected areas.
