A group of young people are looking to raise money for a trip to El Salvador in March to build houses for the less fortunate.

The group had traveled with the Kids Cancer Care Foundation to the Dominican Republic, and El Salvador previously to help build homes, paint houses, and do odd jobs for homeless people, and because they are too old to be a part of the next Kids Cancer Care trip, they’d like to do it on their own.

Rachael Carter is just one of the Cochranites who would like to travel to El Salvador, she says the previous trips have been life changing.

“A lot of people left their hearts there, got new experiences, and saw how other people lived without anything and could still smile,” she explains. “We’re actually just trying to fund raise for a different trip to El Salvador this year, so we can build houses for the homeless and get another experience. It's really cool to help those in need, we really want to give it a try this year and see if we can go on our own.”

The group is hoping to organize the trip with Shelter Canada, which is an organization that specializes in sending volunteers to El Salvador to help build housing.

Carter says helping the less fortunate makes her smile, and has made her a more grateful individual.

“You see people who have next to nothing, they can't take anything for granted because they don’t have much, and it makes you realize how happy other people are to have so little. You come back to Canada, and you see how much you have to be grateful for, whether its a happy family, or food on the table. It makes you feel really, really good to help other people because you know that you can.”
