A young hockey player from Cochrane has been drafted by the Calgary Flames.

17 year old Dillon Dubé was selected in the second round, 56th overall in the 2016 NHL Draft on Saturday, June 25.

Dubé says he had troubles sleeping the evening before he was selected, and slept in on Saturday instead of watching the draft. When he was woken by his parents, he knew something had happened.

"About 8 or 9 in the morning my mom was running downstairs yelling, and my parents were pretty happy so I knew there was something going on," he shares. "Once they told me it was Calgary, it didn't feel real at all, they've always been my hometown team. I've never pictured myself putting on their jersey or anything, now I guess that starts."

He says the experience is even more exciting since he is a Flames fan.

"The Saddledome is the only rink I've ever watched an NHL game at, so I think that's the coolest thing for me, is to one day play at the Saddledome."

Dubé has been on skates since he was about 4 years old, he moved to Cochrane when he was 10, and played for the Cochrane Rockies, and then the Bow Valley Timberwolves.

The young Centre then went on to play in the Western Hockey League with the Kelowna Rockets, posting 25 goals and 40 assists in 65 games in the 2015-16 season.

He shares he's not sure what's next, but is hoping everything works out.

"It's a long road still, I'm only 17 years old. I think the biggest thing for me is to be patient with development and see where everything leads me. I think the goal for now is try to make the Flames as soon as I can."

Young players dream of the day when they will be in the same position as Dubé, he says the best way to get there is to never stop having fun with hockey.

"You gotta have fun with it, when you get to the level that we're at it becomes a job, but you still have to be able to enjoy it. That's the biggest thing is that if you don't have fun, its not the right thing. For me, I love going to the rink everyday, I don't know what I would do without it."
