This weekend Albertans will not require a license to go sport fishing in the province as Alberta Environment and Parks will host its second Family Fishing Weekend of the year on July 9 and 10.

Janine Higgins, Community Engagement Lead, AEP, says it's an opportunity to introduce families to fishing, and the great outdoors.

"It's a great way to connect with nature and develop a passion for our natural environment," she says. "It's a way to take your family out, and get them interested and develop a passion for fishing."

Although a license will not be needed to fish this weekend, provincial regulations for sport fishing still apply.

"People need to know that all regulations still do apply, they can look it up online, or they can pick up a regulation book from one of the outfitters that sell fishing licenses. Make sure you are still following the rules, we want to make sure that everybody is still being safe."

Higgins adds the Family Fishing Weekend does not apply to national parks.

"If you're fishing in a national park you still do have to have a license for that, and it's actually a different license than what you need for fishing outside of a park in Alberta."

She recommends heading to the nearest stocked pond where you live to enjoy the weekend.

The next Family Fishing weekend will be held on the Family Day Long Weekend in February 2017.
