It has been determined that it was an abandoned campfire that caused the recent wildfire near Canmore. Human negligence was the cause of last week's Devil's Head or Black Mountain wildfire north of Canmore that burned more than 676 hectares or 1,670 acres of forest.

The area is a popular destination for hikers and hunters. The wildfire was reported on September 4th by someone calling 310-FIRE.

Investigators are asking for the public's help in finding the people responsible for abandoning the campfire. Agriculture and Forestry wildfire investigators are working closely with RCMP to identify individuals who were in the area between August 30 and September 4.

Fines for failing to extinguish a campfire properly can range from $600 to $840.
