A Cochrane area Ranch is opening its doors this Sunday, Aug. 21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., to give locals a look at where their food comes from.

LJ Ranch will participate in Alberta Open Farm days for the first time this year, it's a family owned and operated ranch located just southwest of Cochrane, which specializes in naturally raised beef.

Joy West-Eklund, LJ Ranch Co-owner with husband Linsday Eklund,  says they are happy to showcase the work they do.

"I think people are interested in local food, knowing where their food comes from, and not having it raised with hormones, antibiotics or any other sorts of additives," she says. "Our cattle are raised here on the ranch from birth."

The ranch has called the community home for more than 30 years, and is happy to answer any questions about their operation, and raising cattle.

"We hope that we can answer their questions, and educate them on how our cattle our raised, what are they fed? How are they handled? Where do they live?"

The ranch will also have different demonstrations from moving cattle from one field to another, to showing how they handle cattle who may need special attention.

Eklund shares Alberta Open Farm Days is a good way to reconnect youth with their food, and local culture.

"Many just think food comes at a grocery store in a package and really don't have a relationship with a farm or ranch. Things have changed, in the past almost everyone had a connection, somebody they knew had a farm, they visited that farm, spent time there, and understood the connection, but I think many school children now don't necessarily know that."
