On your mark, get set, go! BMX Day is being celebrated at tracks all around Alberta tomorrow (May 28).

A partnership between Alberta BMX and Alberta Bicycle the one day event is the perfect opportunity for new and old riders to test out the track.

Brad Christensen, President of the Cochrane BMX Club, says BMX Day is suited to anyone who has an interest in the sport. "As long as you can pedal a bike on two wheels you are welcome to come out to the track."

No gear, no problem. "If you're new to the sport you just have to make sure you have the proper clothes on. Long pants, good sturdy shoes, and a long sleeve shirt. We have the rest of the equipment for them; we have the helmet, bike, and gloves supplied so they can come out borrow a bike for a little while, do a couple of laps, and try it out."

If you are concerned that your child may be too young, Christensen, says it doesn't take long for young riders to gain strength and speed. "You see it all the time in the young kids who are a little intimidated by the rhythm section and the start hill but we've got lots of older riders, parents, and helpers that are on the track all the time to help encourage those little ones and start with a little section of the track at a time and their confidence and skills grow quite quickly."

Christensen has been involved with Cochrane BMX for the past five years, stating in his time Alberta BMX Day just keeps growing bigger and better.

"This is a really busy day for us and we do end up with a bunch of new registrations coming in that day and the week after. It is a great day for the club, our membership, and promoting the sport."

Alberta BMX Day runs from 10 am to 2pm at the BMX track with regular season race nights beginning this Monday (May 29) with coaching beginning the first Tuesday in June.
