OK, Sunday wasn't their best performance, but two points is two points.

The Cochrane Chaos junior female hockey team came from behind to notch a win, Dec. 10, their second of the weekend, and are now just one point back of the south division leading Central Alberta Amazons.

The Calgary Warriors are trailing in the south division, so grabbing a 3-1 lead in the opening stanza was a bit of a wakeup call for the Chaos. The Cochrane team responded by switching on the burners and tying it up 4-4 by the end of the second. They scored the winner early in the third before being content to contain the Warriors and come away with a 5-4 win.

It's been a bit of a grind for the Chaos the last two weekends, so perhaps it was one of those games they wanted to get behind them. Still, they did outshoot their opponents 56-24 and dominated the play.

"They've had a tough two weekends and I think it all kind of stacked on to them today," says Chaos head coach Derek Loomer. "I mean, they put up 56 shots. They deserved better than five goals. It just seems every time the puck came down towards our way it was odd man rushes; two-on-ones, breakaways, three-on-ones, and that kind of stuff. That's from being overly aggressive on offensively and not having the energy to come back when we needed to. But in the end we got our two points and we'll put them in the bank."

It may also have something to do with an emotionally-draining shootout win over the Central Alberta Amazons the night before in Penhold. After a scoreless first period Breanna Martin put the Chaos ahead 1-0 in the second. The Amazons scored two early in the third to temporarily take the lead until Ashley Richards tied it to force overtime. Nothing came out of the bonus period so it came down to a shootout.

"They were very solid, very patient," says Loomer.  "Everyone was on their games and focused and we ground it out. It would have been good to come away with a straight out win instead of a shootout win, but the Amazons are a good club and if you want to win against them you have to be on top of your game the whole 60 minutes.

The Chaos have one game left before the Christmas break and it's a home game worth checking out. The Chaos will be locking horns with the Amazons and the winner will sit on top of the south division. The puck drops at 5 p.m. on Sunday Dec. 17 at Totem One in the SLS Family Sports Centre.

"They're going to come out hard, we're going to come out hard and I think it will be a really entertaining game for anyone who manages to come out to watch," says Loomer. "It will be a great way to go into the Christmas week."

In Sunday's game, scoring was spread between five Chaos shooters. Cochrane's Summer Gibbons scored her sixth goal of the season while singles also went to Ryann Altwasser, Shelby Kirkpatrick (also getting an assist), Aspen Koziak and Leanie Scholtz. Cochrane's Jenna Waslik had two assists and other helpers were credited to Brette Matheson, also of Cochrane, Breanna Martin, Faith Gette and Kiera Davidson.

The Chaos are now 13-3 on the season with two of their losses coming early in the season.
