Two resounding victories over the weekend have officially wrapped up first place in the south division for the Cochrane Chaos of the Alberta Junior Female Hockey League (AJFHL).

Fifteen straight wins by the club also put them in the running for first place overall in AJFHL. The picture will become clearer when they face the top two teams in the north on Saturday in Red Deer. They play the Edmonton Wolves on Saturday morning, then the Lakeland Rustlers, who lead the north, in the evening.

The Chaos are 1-1 against the Wolves and have won both games against the Rustlers.

"Next weekend is really important, so we have a good week of practice and be ready to play against those two teams. It's a different marker, a different level of competition, so I think it will be valuable to get in those two games before we head into the playoffs."

Cochrane's Sarah Nusl is in her third year with the club and has fully recovered from a separated shoulder suffered early in the season that saw her miss six games.

"I don't think we've had this strong of a team since I've been here, so it's awesome to lock up first place," she says. "I look forward to playoffs."

She's also pumped to face the stiff competition at the showcase.

"It's going to be a much tougher weekend for us. I'm looking forward to some good practices this week, bearing down, and playing our best hockey next weekend."

The Chaos took a 9-0 lead in the first period on Sunday against the Southern Sage. It ended 17-1, with Sage's lone goal coming with 58 seconds left on the clock on a blooper. The Sage's two goalies faced a total of 76 shots, compared to the 12 faced by Cochrane goalie Ella Fournier.

The scoring was spread over the Chaos lines with hat tricks going to Kelly Stanford and Carly Wlad. Cochrane's Sarah Nusl had a goal and assist and Summer Gibbons scored one.

On Jan. 28, the Calgary Jags scored first but after that, it was all Chaos in a 7-1 final.

The Chaos hasn't lost a game since mid-October.

Playoffs begin on Feb. 18.
