The Cochrane High girls golf team was fired up and ready to compete in provincials on Sept. 27 after winning the South Central zone banner for 3A/4A schools.

Now they'll have to wait until spring after the Alberta Schools' Athletic Association (ASAA) postponed the tournament because of rising COVID numbers.

"To the student-athletes who have qualified for provincials, congratulations on your performances at your zone championships," states the announcement. "We’re looking forward to seeing you all at provincial championships when it is safe to do so."

The team of grade 10 golfer Toryn Bosanko and grade 12 golfers Jenna Virjee, Aubrie Shapkin, and Julia Shinan were the top 3A/4A team in Rocky View divisional play last week and the South Central Zone on Sept. 21.

CHS golf coach Patrick Court says it was great to witness.

"It was funny because a couple of the girls, Aubrie and Julia, tried out in grade 9 because Aubrie had played with her parents and Julia didn't really golf before. They came and won the grade 9 divisional banner. So since then, those girls have come back and loved it and won divisional banners. This is their first zone banner."

Also in divisional, Cochrane High's grade 9 girls came second, and grade 9 boys came third.

Bow Valley's Zach Haydamack finished in the top three in senior boys at zones.

Both tournaments were hosted by Bert Church High School and played at the Carstairs Golf Club. Court says there was plenty of sunshine for this week's round, but last week the golfers faced cooler and wet conditions.
