The Cochrane High Cobras track and field team are the 2016 3A Schools Provincial Champions, ranking fourth out of all schools in Alberta with a point total of 353.75.

The team sent 35 students to compete in 38 events in Edmonton on June 3-4.

Only Strathcona High School (Edm), Medicine Hat High, and William Aberhart (Calgary) beat that point total. Esther Sieben, Cobras track and field head coach, says ranking with the larger schools is a big accomplishment.

"This is the first year that we've had 35 kids on our provincial track team, and we have one of the toughest zones to qualify out of," she says. "Ranking 4th as a 3A school is just phenomenal."

The team also took home a record haul of medals for the school, one athlete even managed to break a provincial record at the meet.

"We had nine medals, five of them gold, four silver, we've never had this many medals. We had a provincial shot put record, Skylar Sieben threw 12.19, breaking the previous record of 12.13."

Sieben adds all coaches are extremely proud of all athletes who participated.

"We had good quality events, and talented athletes, and it was shown, it was a full team effort."
