If you grew up in the 80s or before, you will remember the sign that was displayed in many residential windows.

The iconic red sign of a child holding an adult's hand was quite prevalent back then, and is now making a reappearance.

Rebecca Warnick Co-Chair of Cochrane Block Parents says the program just started up again in June of 2015.

"With all the things that go on in and around the Province, (we thought) that we should start it up and try and help kids out and it's also (for) seniors as well."

Cochrane Block Parents is looking to add more houses and businesses to its roster and needs your help.

Warnick shares they currently have 11 recognized block parent homes but would love to see that number grow.

"It always helps to have, if you can, one on every block but we would just be happy with anybody joining. If your neighbour is a block parent it's okay to be a block parent as well, because it's just that many more opportunities for children or seniors to go for help."

Warnick is not sure why growth is slow, but says factors such as restricted hours for police checks are one deterrent. Anyone over the age of 12 needs to be checked for safety reasons.

Warnick says besides acquiring more residential block parents, businesses can be block parents too.

"If you don't have a high turn over you can actually become a business block parent which would allow kids if you are getting bullied to go there and get assistance as well."

You are not a pit stop though, adds Warnick, the block parent program is designed to offer assistance.

"You are more like the middle man, if they needed somebody for help ambulance or they are being bullied and they need their parents or if by chance you need to get police involved we can contact for them."

Block Parents is all about community, comments Warnick. "We are there to help when someone is in need,"

Warnick says if you have time to help out by either becoming a block parent or helping the Cochrane chapter, you can contact her at cochraneblockparents@gmail.com or find out more information here.
