On Saturday, November 12, members of Cochrane Fire Services will glove and lace up for a good ol'hockey game.

Taking on NHL alumni, Fire Services are hoping to raise some money to support Cochrane youth.

Chris Chyka, Cochrane Firefighter, says with rising costs for families, an event was created to give Cochrane youth a hand up.

"Our goal is to raise some money for helping kids just get on the ice so paying for registration fees; no nets no equipment, just get on the ice to play hockey."

Chyka says they were alerted that a program running through Cochrane Minor Hockey to help assist kids, was exhausted.

"I don't have the exact numbers on me but something like (first year) they had about 15 people apply, and last year they had somewhat 70 kids apply for help with registration fees."

Although Jumpstart and Cochrane Right To Play also support families get into sport, he says to his knowledge, Cochrane Minor Hockey tapped out those funds.

"They exhausted them; that is why we decided, they needed help above and beyond even those two programs."

With tough economic times the group of firefighters is hoping to do the best they can for raising funds.

"We're hoping between $5,000 and $10,000, we're trying to keep our goals modest."

Chyka says puck drops at 2 pm and it should be a good game.

"We will be playing the NHL Alumni team, so players who have previously played from a varying degree; some that have played a couple hundred games to a couple seasons. I am sure we (firefighters) will have a couple good minutes in us until they take over and start lambasting us out there."

The players will face off on Totem 1 at SLSFSC, tickets for the game are $10 and an open evening social banquet at Killarneys will follow with a silent auction. More information can be found here.
