Registration has been climbing for Cochrane minor football since a relaunch plan was announced by Football Alberta late last week.

Vice-president Paul Vaillancourt says the full season plan will be laid out during a parent information session on June 30. It will include details of health protocols that will need to be strictly followed by the players.

Players could be returning to the field as early as July. Traditionally, it's a blackout month, but that may change because spring camps had to be cancelled.

Those discussions are currently taking place within Calgary's football associations, of which Cochrane is affiliated.

"We'll wait to hear from the associations, and then by June 30, we'll have our complete plan. We'll know basically if we're going to be running things in July or if we're going to formally start in August," says Vaillancourt.

Play will be restricted to practice, camps, and scrimmages. Currently, health regulation prohibits games until phase 3 of the relaunch.

Either way, Vaillancourt says football teams spend four to five times more practicing than playing games. He sees it as a golden opportunity.

"It can be pure fun, and pure development," he says. "I think it could be one of the best years ever."

Football fits within the health regulations. Typically, a team has 40 players and coaches, falling below the cap of 50.

It's been a busy offseason for the association. Its structure has been enhanced to create a fluent flow of skill development from one age group to the next.

Vaillancourt says they've also adopted a new code of conduct that will be signed by coaches, players, and parents.

He is chairing a coaching committee that is providing guidance and counsel to coaches coming up through the organizations. A completely revamped website also provides a range of resources for coaches.

"Cochrane is a big football town, and we want to make sure it continues to thrive," he says. "We train up our kids to get them ready for not only high school football, but USports."
