The Cochrane Generals may have had 57 shots on net last night but only two made it through High River Flyers goaltender Davyn LaRocke.

Still, the 2-1 win pulls the Gens to even on the season and they're looking to breach the 50 per cent mark late afternoon against the Lomond Lakers.

A goal by Dean Olenyk with three minutes remaining from linemates Patrick Forde and Chris Sambrook proved to be the winner. It gave the Gens a shortlived 2-0 lead. Going with a sixth attacker shortly afterward paid dividends for the Flyers. They continued to push the Gens for the final 2:30 of play but solid defensive play saved the day.

The Gens were in control for the first two periods during which they racked up 46 shots to the Flyers'  17. A powerplay goal by Zack Cugnet put the Gens on the scoreboard early in the second from Dean Olenyk and River Ross.

That all changed in the third when they played the better part of the period shorthanded with a seemingly endless stream of penalties. It all started 23 seconds into the period when Jonah Desrosiers received a five-minute penalty and a game for a high hit.

This game marked the first goal for rookie Dean Olenyk. In the four previous games, he assisted on two and was eager to score.

"It's nice to get it out of the way," says the longtime Cochrane minor hockey player who played the last two seasons with the Airdrie CRF Bisons.

The Cochrane product says he is adjusting to the play in the Heritage Junior Hockey League.

"It's a lot more physical and a little chippy out there, too. It definitely hits you in the face."

Rookie goalie Jordan Lott was named first star and got his second straight win as a Gen. The night previous he earned his first shut out in a Gens uniform.

"I was looking forward to getting my second start and I was happy with the outcome," says Lott.

"Our team's really good on the defensive end and we were able to shut them down and keep shots out at the perimeter. That makes my life easy."

Reigning from Canmore, he is impressed with the Gens and the community.

"I think the hockey culture is great and everyone has been so welcoming. The town support is great compared to my early days in hockey."

The Lomond Lakers will be hungry today in search of their first win of the season. The puck drops at 5:30 p.m. at the Cochrane Arena.
