Cochrane kids have the chance to make the best memories at summer camp next week without parents needing to break the bank.

LeAnne Lien children's ministry assistant at Bow Valley Baptist Church said they're excited to once again be offering the free Backyard Kids Camps.

"It is free to the kids of Cochrane. We are in six neighbourhood parks, so it's outdoor and there's all kinds of stuff for the kids, there's games, stories, small groups, they do crafts, and they do singing throughout the morning."

Lien said the kids always have a blast.

"We sing, lots of kids love just singing in the parks, a lot of them love the game time running around because we have so much space and I'll say that the town has been absolutely amazing at allowing us to use parks and neighbourhoods."

There are more than 200 kids currently registered for camp this year but Lien said some years they've had upwards of 400 to 500 children.

The camp is open to children who are going into grade one through grade five.

The half day camp runs July 8-12 at these local parks:

  • Bow Meadows, Bow Ridge, and Jumping Pound - 9 a.m.-noon, Crawford Park, just off of George Fox Trail
  • East End - 9 a.m.-noon, Centennial Park/greenspace
  • Heartland/Heritage Hills - 9 a.m.-noon, Appaloosa Park, at Paint Horse Drive
  • Riversong - 9 a.m.-noon, Park at River Heights Green and River Heights Blvd.
  • Sunset Ridge -  9 a.m.-noon, at the Sunset Circle Playground
  • West Valley, West Terrace, West Pointe - 9 a.m.-noon, at Samuel Spicer Park,  at W McManus Rd

"On August 8, we are inviting them all back again not for a camp but for a one time event. In honour of the Olympics this year we're going to do a summer Olympic theme, inviting all those campers, all those families and if they want to bring friends back here at Bow Valley Baptist Church."

The camp is sponsored by three local churches, Bow Valley Baptist Church, Cochrane Alliance Church and Tapestry Church.

Backyard Kids Camps has been offering camps to local children since 2014.
