For the second time in less than a month, Cochrane RCMP investigated reports of threats via social media site "Snap Chat'.

RCMP say they quickly responded to a call from Vice Principal of Mitford Middle School who had heard of threats via third party information.

RCMP Sergeant Darleen White says they did investigate the incident.

"We had members attend the school immediately who spoke with the staff, witnesses, students, and the suspect. After we thoroughly investigated the matter we determined that it was not substantiated. There was no safety concerns towards any of the students, staff, or the school."

Sgt. White says while Snap Chat may not be the worst social media site, it is popular with the younger crowd.

"I don't know if it's the worst one out there, I just know that it's the one that's being more commonly used by the youth out there today."

White wants to remind parents to teach their children the dangers of social media, and how information can be misleading.

"We would like to remind everybody to just be cautious of what they are putting out on social media, that includes Snap Chat, Facebook, Instagram- because it is very easily misinterpreted.

White says keep tabs on your youth in regards to social media.

"I would recommend that parents regularly check their kids social media accounts, go on their phones check their text messages; just know what they're doing and what they're up to, to ensure their safety as well."

If you are worried about threats against your child, or your child is threatening someone, Sgt. White says keep the information.

"Depending whether they want the police involved, keep the phone so the information can't be deleted or take a screen shot of it so we have that information to investigate."
