On Friday, May 22, 2022, at approximately 11:50 p.m., Cochrane RCMP Traffic Services conducted a check stop on Glenbow Drive.

A vehicle pulled into the checkstop and following a conversation between the driver and officer the driver then accelerated and struck the officer and fled the area. 

A second officer had to act quickly to jump out of the way to avoid being struck. 

The vehicle was observed entering the Sunset neighbourhood and additional officers from Cochrane and Stoney Nakoda RCMP assisted in securing the area after which the driver was located and arrested. 

The officer was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and has since been released. 

William Richard Kinning, aged 39 of Cochrane has been charged with : 

  • Failing to stop while pursued by police
  • Operating a motor vehicle in a dangerous manner causing bodily harm 
  • Assault of a police officer with a weapon 
  • Operating a motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol
  • Operating a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration exceeding 80 mg%

Kinning was released following a judicial interim release hearing and will appear in Cochrane Provincial Cout on May 31, 2022.

Cochrane RCMP continues to investigate the incident and is asking anyone with dashcam footage from May 20 at 11:45 p.m. to 12:10 a.m. in the area of Glenbow Drive, Highway 22, and Highway 1A to the Sunset neighbourhood to contact Cochrane RCMP at 403-851-8000.
