Several members of the Cochrane RCMP detachment will be attending today's regimental funeral for Cst. Harvinder Singh Dhami in Sherwood Park, AB.

RCMP communications officer Cst. Bonnie Sauve says he was known by some members of the local detachment.

"It's truly unfortunate," she says. "My understanding is that he was a funny, well-respected, kind human being, and I'm sure he's going to be missed dearly."

Cst. Dhami died after his vehicle crashed while responding to a noise complaint at 2 a.m. on Township Road 540 east of Edmonton on Apr. 10. He joined the RCMP in 2019 and was posted to Strathcona Municipal detachment, where he was known to be a team member who was compassionate, caring and very community oriented.

"Losing a member of our police service and a member of the community is incredibly difficult," said Deputy Commissioner Curtis Zablocki, Commanding Officer of the Alberta RCMP. "We are very appreciative of the support that has been extended to the family, our staff, and the community."

The funeral procession begins at 10 a.m. from the Bethel Lutheran Church and the funeral will commence at 11:30 a.m. at Millennium Place.

Due to the large number of mourners, access to the funeral service inside Millennium Place will be restricted to invited family members, friends, and first responders.

Members of the public are welcome to line the funeral procession route to pay their respects. In addition, a live feed of the procession and funeral service will be provided on the Alberta RCMP YouTube channel.

Cst. Dhami was a big supporter of the Meals on Wheels program. In lieu of flowers or other donations, the family is asking the public to support their local Meals on Wheels program.
