Nine members from Cochrane Search and Rescue (SAR) assisted Canmore RCMP in locating a missing base jumper in the vicinity of Ha Ling Peak (east end of Rundle Mountain).

On the evening of August 7, Cochrane Search and Rescue received a call for help; at 8 am on the 8th, their services were deployed. Many different organizations aided in the search until around 2 pm when the search was stood down.

Located in a different search area from where Cochrane SAR was looking, the body of a 34 year old Calgary man was located near Miners Peak.

Mark Smith, Search and Rescue spokesperson says although saddened by the news, relief was felt by all those who were searching.

"We are grateful that he was located and a small measure of closure can now be provided to his family and friends."

Smith says while SAR members are always hoping for a positive result, sometimes the outcome is tragic.

"We are only volunteers, we are only human beings; we do have a support network available to members within Cochrane Search and Rescue where if our members need assistance after being active in the search then we do have that available to them."

Smith adds that unfortunate events like this are good reminders for base jumpers, and backwood enthusiasts to take safety precautions.

"If they have the finances to buy a locator beacon or GPS device it is certainly good to have that when going into the back country. Also tell family and friends where you will be, and where you park vehicle. So if the worst does happen it gives search and rescue teams a greater opportunity to locate you."

Since May of this year, Cochrane SAR has been involved in roughly 4 search and rescue call outs.

While the Cochrane Chapter is currently not recruiting new members for the remainder of 2016, they will be looking in early 2017. For more information on the organization, check here.
