Local Cochrane man, Cody Matechuk has won gold in Snow BikeCross at the X Games for the third time.

The 27-year-old is back home now after competeing in Apsen, Colorado last month.

Matechuk says the sport is growing each year.

He says "Every year there's more people lined up, more people racing them. The back country is where these things really thrive so the mountain parking lots like Revelstoke and Whistler you can see every year there's more and more snow bikes so it's pretty cool to watch the sport grow."

He says he's fortunate to live so close to some of the best places in the world to train.

"We got some of the best mountains in the world, I've traveled quite a bit now and I always seem to come back to Revelstoke or Whistler but on the closer end we have Golden too that's only a couple of hours away. There's lots of different areas to go riding around home, it's pretty cool."

He says he's going to take a bit of time off now and go on a vacation but there's more racing in the future.

"The X Games is our big one. There are also some races following the US National Snow Cross and the Canadian National Snow Cross and we're trying to build a snow bike specific series."

He says he plans to focus on back country racing over the next while and might do some small races in some northwestern United States in March or April.

Matechuk isn't restricted to snow bikecross, he is also an avid skydiver and a base jumper. Having completed 425 base jumps and over 70 wing suit base jumps.
