A Cochrane woman who was charged with public mischief earlier this month has been released from custody.

On April 19, 2021, 38-year-old Cherry Lee Dietrich from Cochrane was arrested in relation to a string of fictitious calls made to the Calgary Police Service (CPS).

She made several calls to CPS stating she was in danger and hiding in a closet at a residence in Calgary. When Calgary Police arrived at the address provided they determined no one was in danger and the complainant was not there.

Cochrane Mounties later took over the investigation and located the complainant in Cochrane's Sunset neighbourhood, and determined the calls to be fabricated and fictitious in nature.

Corporal Troy Savinkoff with the Cochrane RCMP says that Dietrich was charged with one count of Public Mischief contrary to section 140(2) of the Criminal Code.

"Making false reports to the police is a serious offence," says Savinkoff. "Fictitious calls not only take our officers from other very important tasks, it also presents unnecessary risk to the police and public as officers try to help those who they believe are in danger."

After appearing in court today, ( April 27, 2021) Cherry Dietrich was released from custody on a $5,000 no cash recognizance with several conditions.

Her next scheduled court appearance is May 11, 2021.
