The semi-finals of the NHL playoffs are quickly approaching and The Montréal Canadiens are the last Canadian team left in contention.

Hockey fans in Cochrane have had to watch fan-favourites such as the Toronto Maple Leafs, Edmonton Oilers, and Winnipeg Jets get knocked out. With emotions running high, some fans have turned to burning their jerseys on social media.

Fire Inspector Jeff Avery with Cochrane Fire Services is hoping Cochranites will not jump on this bandwagon.

“Knowingly burning something, that's arson. There is a chance of you setting something else on fire beside the jersey or setting your own clothes on fire. You're just increasing your own chances of hurting yourself.

“I love sports, and to me, it's just the most disrespectful thing you can do to a hockey franchise or football or any sporting team.”

Avery says that he won’t be burning a jersey, even though he has seen his favourite teams have their season cut short this year.

“Unfortunately, Calgary didn't make it. So I switched teams and decided to go with Winnipeg and they are out, so I guess I'm going with Boston now.”
