Canada Day celebrations will look different this year but one thing will remain the same.

Canada's 153 birthday will finish off with fireworks.

Bella Fallis, President of Cochrane and Area Events Society (CAES) says one month ago having fireworks on July 1 wasn't a reality but that has since changed.

"We are thrilled to announce that we will be ending the evening and a fabulous day of virtual activities with everyone's favourite part of Canada Day and that's fireworks.

"We still need to finalize the location and I think we're close on that."

As far as the how the rest of the day will look, there won't be a big gathering over at Mitford Park like every other year.

"We are still in Phase one of the province opening so we still need to keep the gathering to under 50 people, I believe, and still practice social distancing. So most of what we're planning is still virtual."

Fallis says they've been working hard on planning a fun-filled day for Cochranites.

"We have great contests, wonderful performances and special guests. There will be a couple of great boxes for purchase and so much more."

The boxes are from Amped2Play and Mountain Made Box.

There is $1000 Cochrane Dollars up for grabs as part of the contests.

Some of the contests include Compose for Canada, Period Costume, Best Dressed Family and Canadian Trivia.

Fallis says there's a good variety of activities planned for July 1.

"I think we have a balance of activities so for example we have a great contest that encourages residents to get outside and decorate their house and garden and there will be food trucks as there were last year, with rules of course."

She says individual neighbourhoods have also planned some activities.

"I would also say check out what's going on in your own community. A number of the communities are involved through their affiliated associations that will be participating in unique events and we will also have volunteer photographers on foot and a drone to help document all these unique events."
