What a show!

The sky above Cochrane was alive last night when an incredible Northern Lights show danced over our town.

Dylan Kaniski is a local photographer who regularly travels to find the perfect aurora borealis shot, but says he didn't need to leave his Riversong backyard to capture amazing photos.

"You could see all of the colours with your naked eye. You could watch them dance over your head. It was one of the most vivid and colourful shows that I've ever seen."

It's not everyday that you're lucky enough to see lights like this in town.

"You want to get away from light pollution, the mountains are pretty good if it's a decently strong show and they can get over those peaks. Usually it's hard to see with your naked eye, the cameras pick them up way better than you ever will and they're not this strong. This is probably a G3 storm, so there's storms from G1 to G5, so this is pretty high on the scale, this is Kp7 out of 9, which is almost as high as it gets."

Kaniski says we can look forward to even more light shows in the future.

"As we approach 2025, that's kind of when the solar max gets here and what that basically means is that the sun is at its peak activity and we're going to be seeing shows like this more often than you'd think."
