Motorists and residents south of town may notice some smoke in the area starting Jan. 30.

Conditions permitting, the contractor for the Springbank Off-stream Reservoir Contractor (SR1) plans to start a controlled slash pile burn, 500 metres west of the Hwy. 22 - Hwy. 8 intersection roundabout. located about 20 km south of Cochrane.

Officials say residents and motorists in the area can expect to see smoke and may experience visibility limitations at this location with the burning.

This work is expected to take place intermittently during the first three weeks of February, depending on wind conditions, and is being conducted in accordance with all relevant environmental and fire management regulations and requirements.

The operations consist of burning residual slash piles and stumps, resulting from the 2022 tree-clearing which was required for the construction of the floodplain berm and auxiliary spillway for the flood control of the Elbow River. These two infrastructure elements are part of the SR1 project currently under construction.
