May 11 is the deadline to complete the 2021 Canada Census questionnaire.

Well before this, all households should have received a letter with a secure access code to complete the census online. Hard copies have also been made available upon request.

Collected is information on the demographic, social, and economic situation of people across Canada and the dwellings they live in.

The government is also conducting a concurrent agricultural census on every agricultural operation in Canada.

Making sure you're counted in helps both Cochrane and Rocky View County. Accurate numbers help the municipalities secure their full entitlement of provincial and federal government grants.

For several years, the Town of Cochrane conducted its own annual population count in years other than the national census. That practice ended in 2019, and our official population is 29,277. Currently, the town estimates our population to be 30,065.

The 2016 federal census set Rocky View County's official population at 39, 407.

Much has changed since the first North American census was conducted in New France in1666. Canada's first one in 1871 pegged our nation's population at 3,485,761. In 2016, it was 36.11 million.

Currently, the census is held every five years.
