A 4x4 Christmas Kindness Challenge is being rolled out by the Helping Hands Society of Cochrane and Area.

Jackie Shier, Helping Hands, Executive Director, says the challenge is to complete four acts of Christmas kindness in the four weeks leading up to Christmas.

"In December we get requests from people saying 'hey, I'd like to volunteer this month with my kids or family,' and we are just encouraging people that they can help in their own neighbourhoods. Get to know your neighbour and help them out, it doesn't have to be a full day it can just be small acts that make a difference in peoples' lives everyday. "

Shier is hoping the idea ripples a wave of kindness throughout the Cochrane community.

"We've had lots of interest from sports groups, individual classrooms at the school, and  just even out in the community with young moms- they think it's a great way to think about giving back, something that can fit into their schedule, and it doesn't cost a lot of money."

Helpings Hands Society has volunteer programs throughout the year including the notable bi-annual food drive, snow helper program, volunteer driver program, summer do crew, and newcomer helper program.

Every week, for four weeks an image will be posted on the Helping Hands website; you can cut out the image and write your volunteer activity on the image and bring it to Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre where it can be added to the 'Christmas Kindness Challenge Wall' or post to the Helping Hands facebook page.

Shier is hoping to see a lot of acts of kindness on their walls throughout the holiday season.

"Get to know your neighbours, do something for them, introduce yourself. Make it feel like a small town again."
